Having now surveyed the damage to Resolute, I came to the conclusion that it wouldn’t be prudent to continue the delivery to Plymouth for the start of the race. I’ve sent an email to the OSTAR Race Committee letting them know.
The more I look at the mainsail, the more issues I find. It might be repairable, but only with some major surgery. Plus I’ve mentioned my concern about the rig. Nothing’s visible from the deck, but going another 2000nm (or even 500 or so to the Azores) doesn’t seem like a good bet.
And there are numerous smaller issues below–no single one of which is a significant issue, but collectively…
So I’ve rigged my storm trysail above the delivery main (which is lashed to the boom) and am heading back to Camden, Maine, from where I started. The pros at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding will be happy to see Resolute–there’s a lot of work to be done on her (no rework) and I’m flexible as to timing.
I’ll keep tracking and posting as I head back. As the Everest statistics show, the vast majority of issues occur on the way back, when one tends to let one’s guard down. So I’ll try to stay vigilant and safe, despite my disappointment at getting caught out in the storm.
Bummer! Better luck next time! For now, Fair winds for the return to Camden!
Smart decision!
Good luck on the way home.
Prudence and good judgment. Sorry that Resolute took such a beating. Safe journey home.
Tough decision but I’m sure the right one!
There’s old sailors and bold sailors, but no old bold sailors!
So sorry that you had to withdraw, but a very prudent decision. I admire your willingness to logically assess the options and come to the conclusion you did. It’s decisions like this that can have far reaching consequences. Safe journey home.
